This Loss Stings
Tough loss today for the Hokies. Even tougher to swallow when it was several simple mental mistakes that gave the game away with about 20 seconds left. First, when clearing the ball on the last possession the VT player should have kept the ball on her outside shoulder to limit the defenders ability to legally check. Our player kept the ball on her inside shoulder, got checked, and lost the ball out of bounds. Second, when clearing the VT player should have been aware of the time. When the VT player got pressured she should have had the ball on her outside shoulder, but she also could have simply tossed the ball all the way down field to let her attackers fight for the ball. Not likely Duke would have been able to gain possession and bring the ball up field in time to score given there would have been under 10 seconds. Sports is as much a mental game as it is athleticism. I applaud the girls hustle today, but again the result is a tough one to accept when two simple mental things could have gotten VT the win. On the bright side these are easily coachable and can be fixed.
